“Countertop” in German is literally “worktop”, and that’s exactly what I intend here, that they should be used. Some woods can scratch slightly easier than some stones, it’s true. But wood is also easier to repair, doesn’t chip or crack like stone, feels nice to touch, and can be fully waterproof and food safe.
If it’s a slab you’re after, I often invite customers to visit my local wood suppliers with me to pick a piece together. Woods I suggest include:
Black walnut
Claro walnut
Bastogne walnut
Sugar maple
Eastern birch
Ash
Oak - Bur, Live, White, etc.
Prices have ranged from $1,200-14,000
